Online writing course: some great website links

This post is not only for the IELTS students but also for the technical writers. Previous time I have suggested some websites for vocabulary.


  1. Learn to Write a Feasability Study You will be sent a newsletter containing a complete course syllabus with links to all the lessons in this free, online course. The course is self-paced, but will guide you through the entire process of preparing, writing, and presenting a complete business feasibility study.
  2. Writing Interview Winning Resumes Your resume is usually the first impression an employer will have of you - it needs to market your relevant skills, knowledge, and accomplishments. Employers usually only spend 30 seconds or so reviewing each resume, therefore, that first impression needs to be the one that counts. It's important to take the time to compose well written, grammatically correct, and error free resumes that focuses on your skills and experience that are relevant to the jobs you are applying for. This class will step you through the process of creating effective resumes. It includes writing tips and suggestions, samples, and answers to your resume questions.

  4. Introduction to Technical Communication: Explorations in Scientific and Technical Writing from MITOpenCourseware. Learn some of the basics of technical writing by following the course notes and syllabus of an MIT instructor. This course is designed to help you develop skills that will enable you to produce clear and effective scientific and technical documents. We will focus on basic principles of good writing-which scientific and technical writing shares with other forms of writing-and on types of documents common in scientific and technical fields and organizations. While the emphasis will be on writing, oral communication of scientific and technical information will form an important component of the course, as well.
  5. Becoming Digital: Writing About Media Change from MITOpenCourseware. "Becoming Digital" traces the change in practice, theory and possibility as mechanical and chemical media are augmented or supplanted by digital media. These changes will be grounded in a semester length study of "reports from the front." These reports, found and introduced by students throughout the semester, are the material produced by and about soldiers and civilians on the battlefield from the introduction of wet photography during the Crimean and Civil Wars to contemporary digital content posted daily to Web 2.0 sites from areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan and possibly even the games and simulations they've inspired. Students will work through the ethical, aesthetic, technical and cultural problems raised by the primary content and secondary readings in three papers, a group project written with Inform 7, a presentation, and frequent discussion.
  6. The NetWriting Masters Course from Writer’s Helper. A free 49-page e-book on writing for the web by Ken Evoy. LFirst of all you have to know my passion for excellence in language. From the time I was a child I delighted in beautifully turned phrases. I spent untold hours living in worlds created only by words. As an adult I've become more skilled in understanding how such beauty is created.
  7. The School of Journalism at Wikiversity. This isn’t one course, but rather, a whole online journalism department through Wikiversity. Pick one course, or take all of them.
    Journalism is a discipline of collecting, verifying, analyzing and presenting information gathered regarding current events, including trends, issues and people. Those who practice journalism are known as journalists.Journalism is often dangerous but very practical in day today world.
    News-oriented journalism often is described as the "first draft of history." Even though journalists often write news articles to a deadline, news media usually edit and proofread the results prior to publication.
  8. Technical Writing. Again, not one course, but a series of courses through Wikiversity. This can be a great way to learn more about technical writing. All technical writing and analysis course work is free for you to use, copy, modify, and adapt as you see fit. This is open source learning.
  9. Marketing Writing Tips from the HP learning center. Page through lessons that illustrate common business writing mistakes and explain how to avoid them.
  10. Creative Writing 101 free course on creative writing from Suite 101. Is creative writing your dream? This course contains eight lessons. Once you finish this course, you may wish to follow it up with their Creative Writing Workshop.
